Readers of Brazil Weekly have been asked to give their opinion about the order of importance of these next big business cities in a poll that ran throughout the past year. Well, here they are, lined up after your interests and voting. So for a minute forget Sao Paulo, Rio and those other 2014 World Cup host cities, as here come Brazil’s next 10 hottest business cities:

1. Campinas, Sao Paulo state
Population 1.1 million, metropolitan region 2.7 million.
Campinas is the undeniable queen of Brazil’s non-capital economic centres. It is situated in Sao Paulo state, close to the metropolitan region of Sao Paulo city (pop. 20 million) and a 2-hour drive to the state capital (depending on conditions). Nevertheless Campinas has carved out its own position and identity among Brazil’s cities, even in Sao Paulo state.

2. Santos Bay Area, Sao Paulo state
Population 1.6 million (including Santos city 420.000, Guaruja 300.000, Sao Vicente 300.000 and others).
The region is called Baixada Santista in Portuguese and hosts the largest port of Latin America, as well as a huge industrial complex and it is the beating heart of Brazil´s shipping industry. Santos and surroundings also boast excellent beaches and hotels, so tourism is a huge industry here, mainly catering to Paulistas

3. São José dos Campos, Sao Paulo state
Population 700.000 inhabitants, though together with neighbouring cities in the Vale do Paraiba more than 1.2 million.
Thanks to two highways, this city is very close to Sao Paulo. Those roads also connect the city to Guarulhos international airport. The short drive from Sao Paulo will bring you to the continent’s aeronautics hub, with the Embraer factory at its core.

4. Joinville, Santa Catarina state
Population 520.000, metropolitan region 1.1 million.
This developing city is a hub of Brazil’s midtech and engineering industry as well as IT. Joinville is close to Sao Francisco do Sul port and Parana’s state capital and business hub Curitiba and has one of the highest standards of living in Brazil.

5. Campos dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro state
Population 500.000
This city in northern Rio state is bound to become more important as a business hub. Campos is already a hub for tourism and the oil industry. And with a good airport, universities and half a million inhabitants it has the basics to be attractive as a business centre.

6. Uberlandia, Minas Gerais state
Population 610.000, metropolitan area 850.000.
Uberlândia is located in the western part of the state of Minas Gerais, in the region called Triângulo Mineiro, a huge strech of Minas Gerais squeezed in between the north of Sao Paulo state and the southern border of Goias state.

7. Ribeirao Preto, Sau Paulo state
Population 600.000, metropolitan area 1.4 million.
In 1911 this city sprang to life with the opening of its first factory, the Antarctica Brewery Company, nowadays part of the AmBev group. Later, a branch of the University of Sao Paulo came to town and this USP-RP stimulated the cultural and academic life in Ribeirão Preto.

8. Suape, Pernambuco state
Ipojuca and Cabo de Santo Agostinho municipalities together have a population of 370.000.
We are cheating here as Suape is not a city. It is part of Ipojuca town, which is part of the Recife metropolitan region. Yet, the development of Suape, one of the largest ports and industrial complexes of Brazil, together with the strong presence of the tourism sector in the area, makes it one of the fastest growing economic zones of the country.

9. Londrina, Parana state
Population 510.000, metropolitan area 1.1 million.
In 1925, the Northern Paraná Land Company was established in London, England. It was responsible for the colonisation of more than 500,000 acres (2,000 km2) in the northern part of Paraná state, which today contains some of the largest cities in Paraná. The region’s fertile land encouraged São Paulo colonists to move in and acquire new areas for production. The city of Londrina was built only in the 1940s.

10. Cabo Frio, Rio de Janeiro state
Population 200.000 or 300.000 including nearby towns such as Buzios, Arraial do Cabo, etc.
This is our last city and it is our wild card. With the new Cabo Frio International Airport (still serving mainly other Latin American destinations), its highly sophisticated tourism, some investment by Petrobras, a legion of retired Cariocas, visits by cruise ships, we think this area is ready to be propelled into world fame.

Brazil keeps tax on autos low.
The Brazilian government postponed increases in taxes on the sale of cars and trucks until next year. This might help to stimulate demand for manufactured goods and spur economic growth.

Goal Control for Brazil 2014
FIFA just picked “GoalControl” for goal line technology for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. This will be the first time that goal line technology will be used at a soccer championship. The system uses 14 cameras (seven for each goal), mounted under the stadium’s roof. Using special software, the system creates 3D images of the ball’s position around the goal. Every second, the 14 cameras produce 500 frames – that’s 2 gigabytes of data – which is then transmitted to 15 computers via fiber optic cables.

A surprising map of the countries that are most and least welcoming to foreigners!

World Economic Forum report on global tourism on foreigners

Brazil is listed on this map as one of the most welcoming countries for foreigners.
Actually that is a long-term tradition.

The results, mapped out above by Washington Post, seem significant beyond just tourism. Red countries are less welcoming to foreign visitors, according to the data; blue countries are more welcoming.

World Economic Forum report on global tourism, past the sections on air travel infrastructure and physician density (by which they mean the number of physicians per capita, not the mass-per-cubic-meter of individual doctors), are some very interesting numbers. The WEF has compiled survey data from 140 countries estimating the attitude of each countries’ population toward foreign visitors. Get the The Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report 2013 here.

The three countries least welcoming to foreigners are, in order: Bolivia, Venezuela and Russia. Other poorly ranked countries include the more troubled states of the greater Middle East (Iran, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia), Eastern Europe and two East Asian states I was very surprised to see so near the bottom: China and South Korea.

Brazil’s Economic Activity Rising?

GreatstartLogoBrazil’s economic activity index rose in January 2013. The rise was the highest value during the last five years. This could indicate that the pace of recovery may be accelerating in Brazil, the world’s second largest emerging market.

The seasonally adjusted economic activity index, a proxy for gross domenestic product, rose 1.29 percent in January. The index fall 0.45 percent (revised) in December, as posted by the central bank on its website earlier this month. The increase was the biggest since June 2008. Many analysts expected a 0.8 percent increase. The non-seasonally adjusted index rose 3.84 percent from a year ago.

President Dilma Rousseff’s government increased efforts to lift Brazil’s $2.5 trillion economy out of the slowest growth in three years. At the same time trying to slow down the highest annual inflation levels in 14 months. Officials have eliminated taxes on food staples, expanded the number of industries benefiting from payroll tax cuts and reduced electricity costs.

Consumer prices in February exceeded economists’ forecasts for the eighth straight month, pushing annual inflation to 6.31 percent.

Brazil News: Forecasts Growth in Business Travel

The Global Business Travel Association (GBTA) released its current Outlook report on Brazil on March 13.

The report shows strengthening of domestic and global economies in Brazil with a strong growth path in 2013. The index increasing by more than 40 points.

Total 2013 business travel spending in Brazil is expected to grow 14.3% to $34.5 billion. In 2014, business travel is expected to grow another 16.1% to $40 billion.

Brazil is currently ranked 8th in the world. With current growth rates, Brazil might surpass Italy, France and the UK over the next two years.

There is a high demand for hotel rooms and air travel, a constrained supply could hurt the business travel market with the upcoming World Cup in 2014 and Olympics in 2016 in Brazil.

A virtual workplace in Brazil is presently preferred because of the functional benefits that SME business owners gain from virtual workplaces; these include expense decrease, having a prominent address and phone number, and preserving company professionalism. If you are a small or medium sized company owner and are looking for to conserve money, you could easily open an office in this virtual environment and in many cases take advantage of services such as meeting rooms and various other services most serviced workplaces offer. Most small business utilize the virtual workplace as their virtual headquarters, a place of your picking, in many cases this is in a center city area. Utilizing the modern technology of today, you could carry out business practically anywhere worldwide. You could be at home in your slipper or on the beach or on top of a hill but your company appears in a prestigious workplace in a town hall, offering you the expert image your business should have.

One of the major reasons individuals choose virtual workplaces is that they do not want their actual office address to be used as the business address. They require a place that fits the sort of business that you have and to give a good impression to your customers and providers. The  virtual office services enable you to use that address to get mail. The virtual office service will then forward this on to your home address or you could gather it once a day.

Even if your business is actually located in your home, you can have an office address to which clients can send mail and make physical deliveries.

The idea of a virtual workplace in Brazil has actually been a success to many SME business owners as it develops an image that they have a huge and effective company. Many of the virtual office  companies have options on services, such as phone forwarding – this is where a neighborhood phone number attached to your virtual workplace is forwarded effortlessly to your mobile or home number. Various other services readily available could be virtual assistants or virtual assistants either helping you with dictation, letter writing or just merely responding to the phone skillfully for you.

e-commerce opportunities for Brazil

Cyber Monday broke records in the USA this year, and resulted in a surge in online sales around the world.

Many e-commerce companies are also focusing on other global shopping trends. The holiday shopping frenzy has begun in earnest!

2012 was a year of technical innovations, most notably the emergence and rapid adoption of smartphone and tablet technology. The shopper-seller relationship is changing rapidly.

There were 6 key worldwide e-commerce trends in 2012:

1) Tablet-commerce and Mobile-commerce retail expansion
2) Increased use of cloud servers
3) More shopping with social networks
4) Border-less shopping communities (Brazil is still behind…)
5) Flexible, local shipping models
6) Online shopping gets more personal
Despite a slowdown in overall economic growth in Brazil, eCommerce continues to charge ahead.

It is expected that online retail revenues in Brazil, currently about US$12 billion, will double over the next five years. The growth in Brazil’s e-commerce is expected to far outpace growth in traditional retail.

So, no surprise that Amazon.com Inc and Google Inc both opened their digital bookstores in Brazil last week. That will hurt the e-book offerings by local booksellers in this fast-growing online retail market.

Introduction of both services highlighted the wide-open nature of Brazil’s $12 billion e-commerce market. Increasing Internet penetration and a swelling middle class expected to give strong growth for years to come.

Amazon will begin selling its Kindle e-book reader in Brazil in coming weeks for 299 reais ($140). In Brazil, the Kindle will take on Samsung and Apple tablets that often cost as much as twice their U.S. retail prices due to import tariffs, steep taxes and inflated local production costs.

Google Play service will offer e-books and movie rentals on computers and mobile devices running Google’s Android operating system.

Brazil remains a market untapped by most global online retailers. The current payment system benefits the local Brazilian businesses, who can provide the localized payment and delivery options. Maybe more international companies might consider opening a business in Brazil.
